Bio Materials
We strive to build with a high proportion of bio-based materials—plant-derived substances made from natural fibres that require minimal processing and, as a result, have very low energy inputs. These plant fibres, formed through photosynthesis, not only store carbon in their structure but also offer a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials.
Using bio-based materials provides numerous environmental, health, and wellbeing benefits compared to conventional petrochemical products. Additionally, they present an opportunity to create buildings with a vernacular rooted in locally available resources.
Bio-based materials are durable and robust, provided key design principles are followed. A simple yet enduring saying captures this approach: “A good hat, and good boots.” With thoughtful design, bio-based materials can lead to buildings that are both long-lasting and environmentally responsible.
