Hillersdon Avenue is a remarkable Article 2 house built in 1899, located in Barnes, London. This project represents the second stage of works on the house, following a complete internal refurbishment in 2017.
As the family has grown, so too has the way they use and live in the space. The family snug, once a separate room off the hallway, was disconnected from the heart of the home—the kitchen. The addition of a garden room allowed for a reworking of the rear ground floor layout, creating an expansive open-plan kitchen, dining, and family room arrangement. This new space serves as a flexible area for family time, play, schoolwork, and enhanced entertaining.
The garden room evokes the charm of a traditional conservatory, with timber-framed glazed windows and doors, and a beautiful, curved roof. The bespoke roof, designed in collaboration with our talented engineers Milk Structures, features a slot rooflight at the rear, sculpting a space where natural light elegantly pours down the curve. The external zinc detailing offers a crisp, high-quality finish that complements the overall design.
The garden room strengthens the connection to the stunning garden, which has undergone transformations to introduce formal divisions and create distinct areas for dwelling, pausing, and sitting. These changes enhance the home’s relationship with its outdoor surroundings, blending indoor and outdoor living seamlessly.
