We don’t have a house style. Our projects are unified by a quest to create a clear concept and follow this through with craftsmanship.
Hillersdon Avenue is a remarkable Article 2 house built in 1899, located in Barnes, London. These homes were built to endure, and this one, with its beautiful period details, had remained largely unchanged for many years. Our clients fell in love with the property but faced the challenge of needing substantial modifications to accommodate their family’s needs, while also preserving what made them love the house in the first place.
We convinced our clients that we could achieve this by reconfiguring the interior without extending the house at ground level, and by working within the existing volume. The goal was to make changes so seamless that the new layout would appear as though it had always been there.
The original layout featured a small, centrally located kitchen, disconnected from the garden with minimal natural light. A rear living room wasn’t large enough to accommodate a kitchen and dining area. Through precise engineering, we relocated the kitchen to the rear, incorporated a walk-in pantry and generous storage, and created the space for a comfortable dining area connected to the garden, all while retaining the beautiful original rear doors. Additionally, a loft was added to provide more bedrooms and bathrooms.
The design of all joinery and finishes was crafted to appear original, enhancing the feeling that the house had always been configured this way—preserving the character our clients loved while meeting their modern needs.
