Introduction
Situated near the picturesque village of Fernhurst within the South Downs National Park, this charming cottage originally featured a poorly constructed 1980s conservatory with a very low ceiling height. We navigated the planning process to replace it with a new extension featuring a pitched roof design, which allowed for significantly more generous ceiling heights. To accommodate the roof pitch, we carefully adjusted the end window heights for a seamless integration.
The extension incorporates a timber frame construction, insulated with sheep wool and a continuous timber fibre insulation layer to eliminate cold bridging. High-quality double-glazed windows and conservation roof lights enhance energy efficiency and natural light, while the exterior is finished with a zinc roof and timber cladding.
Design
During the concept design stage, we used watercolour sketches to explore the interiors, experimenting with materiality, colours, and textures to create a design that enriches and elevates the overall experience. While we developed the initial concept for the kitchen, the client opted to work directly with the contractor during the on-site stage. As a result, the finished kitchen reflects the client’s preferences and decisions rather than our original design vision.
This project highlights our flexibility and ability to adapt to our clients’ needs, offering tailored services ranging from full involvement—from initial concept to project completion—to partial services, such as planning ‘plus’ or Building Control details.
Regardless of the size or budget, our focus remains on creating high-quality, well-insulated spaces that are thoughtfully proportioned and filled with natural daylight.
