Light and Form

Light & Form

Albion Terrace is situated in the Albion Square Conservation Area of Haggerston. This original Victorian terraced house, built in the 1840s, required modernisation, repair, and extension. Our brief focused on extending the side and rear of the existing outrigger while avoiding traditional flat roof designs.

Our approach at Albion Terrace aimed to create a dynamic architectural form featuring a captivating ceiling landscape that allows the space to be flooded with soft north light. The design incorporates four equal mini-pitched roofs with narrow, west-facing roof lights that capture the movement of late afternoon sunlight while preventing excessive heat gain.

The roofs and rear elevation are clad in pre-weathered standing seam zinc, complemented by the warmth of bespoke solid Douglas Fir doors and windows. This project seeks to establish a strong contrast between the old and the new, resulting in a simple yet striking design that aligns with the client’s vision.

Additionally, the design includes future-proofing features for hotter summers, such as an air source heat pump system for both heating and cooling, along with Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system to enhance energy efficiency.
