‘Expressing the structure can help form a calmer space’ ’

Quilter Street located just off Columbia Road in east London is a beautiful, terraced street of Victorian workers houses that are modest in size but rich in historic character. Our challenge was to create the additional living space our clients needed without losing the character of the house and avoiding a stark contrast between old and new.

One of our key decisions was to leave the structural elements exposed rather than concealing them behind a large ceiling. By expressing the structure and avoiding bulkheads or steps in the walls, we were able to create a clean, calm volume where the original building’s support is clearly legible. This approach adds clarity and interest to the new space.

We selected materials that embrace the idea of natural patina and change, allowing the old and new to blend over time rather than remaining distinctly separate. Externally, we used raw soft zinc, which oxidises within months, and is a conservation-grade material designed for church restoration. Inside, natural timber, stone, and concrete flooring, combined with conservation roof lights, create a relaxed, airy, and inviting atmosphere.
