Community Participation
Our scheme prioritised community involvement, offering training in natural building techniques to empower members to actively participate in construction and play a meaningful role in post-occupancy evaluations.
Key Design Principles
- A Large, Low-Cost Industrial Roof
A permanent timber structure would provide shelter for smaller, pod-like buildings constructed by the community. This roof would offer protection during the build phase and provide solar shading in summer. - Strategic Orientation
The structure’s orientation maximised winter solar gains and enhanced the performance of proposed PV arrays, reducing reliance on additional energy services. - Community-Designed Pods
The smaller structures under the roof were simple, low-tech, and low-cost, made from natural materials and designed for community involvement. These pods were fully reversible, allowing for future reconfiguration and adaptation.
Our vision was for this building to serve as a true community asset—reflecting their ownership and connection, rather than resembling a shiny, expensive addition. Together, we can create spaces that genuinely belong to the people!
