Fabric First

The best way to reduce energy demand nationally is by adopting a Fabric First approach.

This strategy prioritises improving the building’s envelope—such as insulation, airtightness, and high-performance windows—before relying on mechanical heating or cooling systems. By enhancing the fabric of buildings, we create structures that are naturally energy-efficient, reducing the need for additional energy inputs and lowering overall carbon emissions. This approach not only decreases energy demand but also improves comfort and resilience, creating sustainable, long-term solutions for reducing our national energy consumption.

We are pleased to have assisted our clients in securing planning and listed building consent for their home in Camden. The approved works include the retrofit of internal wood fibre wall insulation, new roof insulation, and the replacement of their gas boiler with an air source heat pump.

Throughout this process, we have strongly challenged Camden Council on their policy of not permitting double glazing in listed private homes, particularly in light of the Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency in November 2019. It is essential that both Local and Central Government support homeowners in upgrading their building fabric to minimize energy consumption, for both environmental and economic reasons.

We will continue to advocate for the right to make glazing improvements, as a Fabric First approach remains the most effective strategy to reduce national energy demand and tackle climate change.
