Project Update

Aluminium or Steel?

The thin-gauge aluminium corrugated roofing sheet for our new-build hemp Nissen hut is now in place. Choosing the right material was a carefully considered decision. Initially, we looked at galvanized steel sheets, but due to their location-specific vulnerability (coastal site) and the limited lifespan of the galvanic protection, we estimated they would start rusting within 5–10 years.

Instead, we opted for thin-gauge aluminium sheets, which offer a significantly longer lifespan of 60–100 years and contain 90% recycled content. While aluminium has a high initial carbon footprint, our analysis factored in the building’s lifespan, aluminium’s exceptional recyclability (98%), and the absence of toxic paint coatings.

Ultimately, the aluminium roof was the best choice to complement and protect our fully bio-based envelope, balancing sustainability, longevity, and environmental responsibility.
